Freaking Bats! 2025

8.5 x 11, Risograph print

Based on the wildlife photography of José G. Martínez-Fonseca, I created a poster illustrating close-up faces of bats, each labeled with their scientific names. I was fascinated with the novelty of seeing the faces the bats close-up, their faces looking alien and silly as the portrait brings out details usually hidden to the human eye.

In creating this poster, I digitally drew the outlines of the portraits and the background colors in a grid and printed them as separate layers, which I printed individually, then layered them over one another on a Risograph printer.

I created many variations, playing with different colors and color schemes as well as different settings on the Risograph printer, such as printing speed and ink contrast.

The poster title is a reference to a comedic video originally posted on the now defunct social media app Vine, which depicts a young girl in enthusiastic Halloween spirit saying, "oh yeah, freaking bats! I love Halloween". I thought the humorous reference would appropriately fit the colorful playful atmosphere of the images.
