In collaboration with the art director of the Bushwick Starr, I illustrated and animated fifteen icons and three artist portraits for the “La Loteria” themed season announcements for social media and the Starr website (https://www.thebushwickstarr.org/).

Animation and Illustration

Example of traditional La Loteria  playing cards

"La Loteria" is a traditional Mexican card game that is similar to Bingo. Our team thought this would be a good theme for the season marketing campaign as it lends itself to "play", both as in playfulness and in performance. As a card game, it purports the idea of community interaction. The tagline for the season is "let's play," beckoning audience members to join the fun, get involved in the community, and support artist performances. Card games require teamwork and mutual respect. Everyone plays on an even playing ground. and the Loteria theme emphasizes the Brooklyn theater's commitment to and support of its community.

These illustrations feature multiple "icons" such as a rat, a seed, and bicycle that represent each of the season's three shows. The yellow backgrounds represent David Cale's show "Blue Cowboy", the red represent La Daniella's show "Gooey's Toxic Aquatic Adventure", and the blue represent Michael Oluokun's "Have You Ever Thought About?" The art director of the Starr and I brainstormed different symbols that could appropriately represent the individual shows, while also working cohesively in a similar style. Some of the symbols used were also requested by the artists who came up with images they thought that would best represent their show.

To really make them cohesive, I made a grid animation that skipped the different cards around, creating whimsical and exciting motion graphics that draw viewers in. Each set of colors falls into a matching Bingo pattern, which results in a bouncy season artist announcement. It is a dynamic, playful way to convey interest and excitement around the new season shows.
