Will My Aim Be True? 2025

Experimental FIlm

An arrow must be drawn back before it shoots forward. I was fascinated by this concept of momentum, and how it relates to coming of age and the formation of identity. Using After Effects and Premiere Pro, I created this "camera-less" animation.

I created this animation in a unique way--first filming scenes of my room, my desk, and myself miming an arrow. This act of performance, inspired by a scene in Deborah Stratman's The Illinois Parables created a sense of repetition, ritual and vulnerability.

I did the animation by scanning in crumpled contact sheets of what I had filmed myself, as well as found pictures of people's eyes from Photography books, including a book I found in the theater department that featured old techniques on costume makeup. The eyes, with their eerie texture move and flash across the screen, a direct contrast to the still and lonely shots of my room. The desaturated texture creates an intimate atmosphere that pairs with the vulnerability of the voiceover.
